2024 Bangkok Ice Naka Tournament, Thailand
(December 12-15, 2024)
Our youth hockey team recently returned from another successful participation in the 2024 Ice Naka Tournament in Bangkok, an event that continues to impress with its excellent organisation and competitive spirit. This season’s tournament saw our athletes competing across two age divisions, with particularly notable contributions from our younger players. Half of our U11 team roster consisted of U9 players who rose admirably to the challenge of competing against older opponents. Throughout the competition, our teams demonstrated impressive hockey fundamentals, executing precise passing sequences and displaying creative individual play. While we encountered two less experienced opponents against whom we emphasised structured team play (requiring at least three consecutive passes before shooting), the majority of our matches tested our players against skilled competition.
Our U9 team delivered a standout performance, advancing confidently to the tournament finals. The U11 team, while dropping two hard-fought games against strong opponents in group play, showed significant development in their tactical understanding and competitive maturity. The final day’s schedule presented a particular challenge with back-to-back games, during which our players’ tendency to rely on individual efforts rather than team systems proved costly. These losses provided valuable teaching moments of the importance of maintaining disciplined team play under pressure.
Beyond the ice competition, we conducted stickhandling sessions on a football field that revealed important areas for improvement. While our players’ enthusiasm for the sport is undeniable, these training sessions highlighted that approximately three-quarters of our athletes struggle with advanced puck control skills, particularly when handling the puck in the air. To continue our program’s upward trajectory, we strongly encourage all players to supplement team practices with regular individual training.
This tournament experience has provided both encouraging signs of progress and clear benchmarks for future development. We extend our sincere appreciation to the tournament organisers, our dedicated coaching staff, and the families whose support makes these valuable competitive experiences possible. The lessons learned in Bangkok will undoubtedly contribute to our continued growth as we prepare for future competitions.
